Parliament Will Continue to Support Geneva Centers

The Swiss Parliament has approved a framework credit of 129.7 million Swiss francs to support three Geneva-based centres in the field of security and peace policy between 2024 and 2027. The National Council had previously approved the proposal with 156 votes in favour and 23 against, with one abstention. The money will be allocated to the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the Geneva Centre for the Governance of the Security Sector (DCAF). These three independent foundations, established by Switzerland between 1995 and 2000, are internationally recognised for their expertise in the field. The credit is 1.7 million francs higher than the previous period, but adjusted for inflation it is the same as in 2016. The proposal was unanimously approved by the Security Policy Commission (SIK-S) of the Council of States, with 36 votes in favour and no abstentions. Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (Mitte/LU) justified the approval of the proposal by highlighting the fact that the three centres had developed into internationally recognised centres of excellence since their establishment. The Finance Commission of the Council of States also expressed its approval. The funds will be used to support the three centres in their efforts to promote security and peace in the world.
