Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin met the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, on Thursday morning. Among other things, the two discussed the situation of nuclear energy and nuclear power plants worldwide and in Europe, as Grossi announced at a press conference in Bern on Thursday.

Among other things, the meeting was an opportunity to address the role of access to energy in development aid and the issue of maintaining safety at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya. This was announced by Economics Minister Parmelin via the short message service X. According to the IAEA, the situation at the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russia, is tense due to repeated shelling.

Grossi also spoke with members of parliament, the federal administration and business representatives on Thursday. Switzerland's nuclear expertise and know-how, as well as its robust supply chain, are ideally positioned to play an important role in global nuclear innovation, Grossi wrote on X about the meeting.

On Wednesday, Grossi gave a presentation at the General Assembly of the Nuclear Forum in Zurich, highlighting a global trend towards nuclear energy. More and more countries are rediscovering nuclear power as a climate-friendly source of energy, he said. He assumes that this trend is also of interest in Switzerland.

He believes that nuclear energy is a valuable component of the energy supply alongside other sources, said Grossi at the press conference on Thursday. He also sees a global trend towards extending the lifespan of nuclear power plants, Grossi continued.

In fact, the Swiss electricity company Axpo announced at the end of March 2024 that it was considering operating the two oldest Swiss nuclear reactors Beznau in Aargau beyond 2030. At the beginning of March, the Council of States had previously shaken up the ban on the construction of new nuclear power plants adopted in 2017: The Council adopted a postulate to examine the construction of new nuclear power plants as a "possible scenario" for securing the electricity supply.
