Basel-based media artist Esther Hunziker receives the Pax Art Award 2024. The jury honors the artist for "her many years of consistent work with digital media".

Born in 1969, the Basel-based artist is one of the Swiss pioneers of media art. Since the early 2000s, she has regularly appeared with an unmistakable visual language, according to a press release issued by the House of Electronic Arts on Thursday.

Before studying art, Hunziker trained as a dressmaker and studied fashion design in Basel. She then founded her own fashion label, worked as a screen designer, experimented with analog video editing technology and created her first interactive narrative forms on the digital web.

The sum of 30,000 francs for the main prize has been divided up: Pax will use CHF 15,000 to purchase a work by Hunziker, while a further CHF 15,000 will support her in the production of a new work, according to the press release.

Two further prizes

In addition, two other media artists will each receive 15,000 francs: Alfaith and Stefan Karrer will each receive CHF 15,000 as prize money and for the purchase of works.

For the first time, two talent promotion prizes in cooperation with Swiss art academies will also be awarded in the amount of CHF 1,000 each. They go to Ana Duran from the Bern University of the Arts and Emma Grosu from the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne.

The Pax Art Awards will be presented on Thursday evening (today) at the House of Electronic Arts in Münchenstein BL.
