Pilot error led to the crash of a small plane on Lake Constance

The plane crash into Lake Constance near Staad SG in April 2022 was caused by an incorrect reaction by the pilot following engine problems. This is the conclusion of a report by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust).
The pilot reported the engine failure shortly after take-off from Altenrhein Airport, according to the Sust's final report. However, no indications of technical defects were found that could have caused or influenced the accident. The loss of power could at best be explained by operating errors.
The crash was ultimately due to the pilot initiating a left turn to turn back to Altenrhein after the engine failed. From that location, however, such a maneuver with a landing on the runway would not have been possible without engine power, the report continued.
The small plane crashed shortly after take-off on April 28, 2022, around fifty meters from the shore of Lake Constance. The pilot, a 72-year-old Swiss man, was killed. There were no passengers on board.
