The two pilots of the plane crash in Emmen are doing well. They crashed on Tuesday during a landing maneuver at the airfield in the canton of Lucerne. Following medical examinations in hospital, they were able to leave the hospital on Tuesday, as army spokesman Stefan Hofer explained on Wednesday.

After a training flight as part of the Air Force pilot school, two PC-21 training aircraft were on their way back to Emmen on Tuesday afternoon. According to the army, the second aircraft left the runway on landing for as yet unexplained reasons.

The two occupants of the training aircraft activated the ejection seats and were able to land with their parachutes. The damaged aircraft came to a halt on the grass next to the runway. According to Hofer, it is not yet possible to give details of the extent of the damage. The aircraft is being investigated by the military justice authorities.

The Swiss Air Force decided on Tuesday to suspend the national flight service with the PC-21 fleet for the time being until further details are known. This is a precautionary measure, said Hofer. It is still unclear when the PC-21 fleet will resume flight operations. The military justice authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The aircraft involved in the accident is a PC-21 training aircraft from the Swiss manufacturer Pilatus. The two-seater aircraft has been in service with the army since 2008. A total of eight aircraft of this type have been procured. It is used for basic and advanced training for jet pilots as well as for air combat, blind flying and aerobatics training.
