Flying away over Christmas and New Year is popular with the Swiss. This festive season, travelers were able to fly to several new destinations from Zurich.
New destinations in December included Shanghai, Bremen, Tampa in Florida, Cartagena in Colombia and Havana in Cuba. This is shown by an analysis of departure data on the Zurich Airport website by the news agency AWP.
The Maldives, Edinburgh in Scotland, Brindisi in Italy and Seville in Spain also made it into the top 100 most frequently flown to destinations. Bologna (up 25 places to 50th), Cairo (up 16 places to 70th), Bucharest (up 14 places to 42nd) and Miami (up 14 places to 44th) also became more popular.
Fewer flights to Tel Aviv and Reykjavik
In contrast, there were fewer flights to Tel Aviv. Following the terrorist attack on Israel by the Islamist group Hamas, many airlines temporarily canceled their connections. Reykjavik and Bordeaux also lost some ground.
London remained by far the most frequently flown to city. 634 aircraft took off from Zurich Airport for the UK capital in December 2023. This means that one in thirteen aircraft flew there from Zurich in December. However, this can be explained not only by the city's popularity for vacation and business travel, but also by London Heathrow's function as a transfer airport.
London was followed by Amsterdam and Berlin. Dubai and New York were at the top of the list of long-distance destinations.
