Possible government replacement election in Basel-Stadt on March 3, 2024

The Basel government has scheduled a possible by-election to the cantonal council and the presidency for March 3, 2024. The by-election would be necessary if Beat Jans (SP) were to be elected to the Federal Council.
A possible second round of voting would take place on the weekend of April 7. The new governing council would then take office on May 1, 2024.
Last Saturday, the SP Switzerland parliamentary group put the President of the Basel government on the two-man ticket to succeed Federal Councillor Alain Berset together with Graubünden National Councillor Jon Pult. The Federal Council election will take place on December 13.
