President Alain Berset will meet Pope Francis in the Vatican next Thursday. One topic of the meeting will be peacebuilding, as announced by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) on Tuesday.

Berset and the Pope wanted to discuss how Switzerland and the Vatican could best support peace efforts, for example in Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the FDHA wrote. The exchange followed on from talks that Berset had held with church representatives in the DRC and Colombia.

This is not Berset's first meeting with Francis. Back in 2018, Berset's first year as President of the Swiss Confederation, he visited the Pope in the Vatican. Also in 2018, Berset met the Pope during his trip to Switzerland in Geneva.

After the visit, Berset will travel on to Paris. According to his department, several summit meetings are on the agenda there on Thursday and Friday as part of the Paris Peace Forum.
