President Alain Berset Opens the 76th Locarno Film Festival

At the official opening of the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday evening, Swiss President Alain Berset jokingly gave a closing speech instead of an opening speech. This is the 76th edition of the festival and the last one under the leadership of the long-time president Marco Solari. Berset praised the film selection of the artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, noting that it came from all continents and that the "Cuvée 2023" was extraordinary. He was both sad and happy, as the world had lost great filmmakers like Luc Godard and Alain Tanner this year, but also happy that the cinema had taken off again after the pandemic. He bid farewell to Locarno with the words "Arivederci Locarno, arrivederci Ticino e viva il cinema!" The 51-year-old Swiss Minister of Culture opened the festival for the last time on Wednesday evening. In mid-June, he announced his resignation. The 67-year-old art collector and founder of the Luma Foundation, Maja Hoffmann, was appointed as his successor and will be the first woman to lead the Locarno Film Festival. After the speech by the Swiss President, the first film evening took place on the Piazza Grande. According to the festival announcement, British actor Riz Ahmed, who was supposed to receive a main prize, will not be present due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes. The Swiss-Portuguese director Basil Da Cunha is the only Swiss filmmaker in the international competition for the Golden Leopard. 17 films are in the running for the coveted prize, which is presided over by the French actor Lambert Wilson. With his third feature film, Da Cunha continues his exploration of a Creole quarter in Lisbon. "Manga D'Terra" marks his return to the competition, four years after his work "O fim do mundo". The Locarno Film Festival runs from August 2nd to 12th.nnnn
