President Viola Amherd will represent Switzerland at the fifth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in Budapest. Around 45 European states and the EU institutions will be represented at the meeting in the Hungarian capital on Thursday.
Amherd will take part in a discussion on economic networking and cooperation in Europe, the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) wrote on Monday. Other summit topics include migration, the security situation and the war in Ukraine.
The prospects for transatlantic relations will also be discussed - two days after election day in the USA. According to the press release, Amherd intends to use the opportunity for bilateral talks with her counterparts and also discuss the status of the Swiss-EU negotiations.
The EPG has existed in this form since October 2022, when it was founded in Prague. Its representatives meet outside the EU in the spring and in the fall in the country holding the EU Council Presidency.
The aim of the association is to facilitate closer exchange between EU countries and partners outside the EU. Its establishment was proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron.
