The "Wild Flowers" project run by a Zurich high school student has won the youngCaritas Award 2024 for its commitment to helping girls and women in Afghanistan. Born in Afghanistan, she and her team provide low-threshold learning opportunities for Afghan women.

In this way, they would not only impart knowledge, but also create a digital network that promotes exchange among each other, writes Caritas Switzerland in a press release on Monday. This would create networks of relationships that would offer women new perspectives and support.

The project pursues a clear goal, Caritas continues: to combat the oppression of women in Afghanistan and to strengthen their participation in society. Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, women and girls have been banned from attending school. This is where the project comes in.

An Afghan woman living in Zurich founded the project in 2023. Born in Afghanistan and raised in Iran, the high school student has been living in Switzerland since 2022. According to the Wild Flowers website, her aim is to help those who have suffered injustice, especially women and girls in Afghanistan.

The Wild Flowers team received the award on Saturday in Lucerne. The prize money of 6,000 francs will be used to fund a workshop or the production of a video about the project.
