A pro-Palestinian group protested against Israel at the Lucerne School of Art and Design on Tuesday afternoon. They demanded that the university management distance itself from Israeli institutions.
In a letter published on Instagram and written in English, the group called for "solidarity with Palestine". It described Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip as "genocide".
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts confirmed the action in writing in the evening at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. It lasted around three hours. Up to 60 people took part.
The head of the Department of Design Film Art was on site from the very beginning, the university announced. There was a lively dialog.
The group demanded that universities condemn the "genocide being perpetrated in Gaza by the Israeli regime" and boycott academic institutions in Israel. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts stated that it condemns violence and discrimination. "However, we are not a political actor", it explained, adding that "our mission" is to "guarantee free teaching and research".
The group also accused the university of exercising censorship when it comes to Palestine. It is committed to freedom of expression and an open, critical and objective discourse, the university stated. For example, it had tolerated a Palestine flag and posters put up during Tuesday's event. Banners had also been put up beforehand.
