The Zurich public prosecutor's office has applied for the man who suddenly attacked and injured three after-school children with a knife in Zurich-Oerlikon on Tuesday afternoon to be remanded in custody. The 23-year-old Chinese man had been living in Switzerland as a student since summer 2023.
The public prosecutor's office applied to the compulsory measures court for pre-trial detention, as announced on Wednesday. The court now has 48 hours to decide on the application.
The 23-year-old has confessed, it is reported. It remains unclear why he attacked the children. The public prosecutor's office did not provide any further information.
The man had suddenly attacked a group of after-school children with a knife on Tuesday lunchtime. A five-year-old boy was seriously injured and two other five-year-olds suffered moderate injuries. As the public prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday, all the children are out of danger.
The nursery worker and a passer-by were able to overpower the attacker and hold him until the police arrived. They are currently assuming a single perpetrator. Even the day after the crime, there were no indications of accomplices.
