Despite the freight train derailment in the Gotthard Base Tunnel in August, the Federal Office of Transport attests to the high level of safety of rail freight transport in 2023. Passenger trains, streetcars, ships and cable cars were also "very safe". However, the number of accidents at work remained high.

The "very safe" rating applies in particular to rail and cable car transport as well as shipping, as the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) wrote in its 2023 Safety Report on Tuesday. There were no fatalities in these modes of transport and the number of serious injuries was in the single-digit range.

The FOT recorded a similar situation in urban public transport by streetcar and bus: there were no fatalities, but more passengers were injured during abrupt braking maneuvers or when getting on and off the bus.

Fatalities, on the other hand, were among employees or third parties such as other road users. Compared to the previous year, however, their number fell sharply from 33 to 14.

There were no fatalities at construction sites or workplaces after four victims in 2022. Nevertheless, the FOT has identified a need for action at workplaces, as Switzerland is in the bottom third in terms of occupational safety compared to the rest of Europe.

The most important accident in rail freight transport in 2023 was the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which had far-reaching consequences. According to the FOT, it is continuing its intensive monitoring here.

In an international comparison, rail transport in Switzerland proved to be very safe. According to the FOT, Switzerland is in third place behind the UK and the Netherlands.
