In its 27th edition, the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography invites the public to reflect on the banal. Especially in the context of the strong presence of sensational images. The photo festival starts on Friday and runs until May 26.

Under the title "Commonplaces", 23 exhibitions, including nine world premieres, will once again be presented in the form of a photographic walk through eleven locations in the city of Biel/Bienne: from the Farelhaus to the Au Lac senior citizens' residence and the Nebia Theater to the Schüsspromenade.

"We are presenting 20 Swiss and international artists and collectives," said festival director Sarah Girard at the media conference on Thursday. The established and up-and-coming photographers come from the USA, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Morocco and Switzerland

For the festival management, the banal stands in contrast to the sensational: "In contrast to the loud images, which assert themselves through their immediacy and emotional potential, the image of the banal builds up more slowly and discreetly observes the contemporary world".

Experience everyday life

The public can immerse themselves in everyday agricultural life with the photographs of Nina Ferrer-Gleize, familiarize themselves with research into the spread of green algae on the coasts of Brittany with the artist Alice Pallot or take a look behind the scenes of the aquarium fish industry with the works of Laurence Kubski.

The Biennale de la Photographie de Mulhouse, one of this year's collaborations, is showing photographs by Matthew Genitempo, who has documented the everyday lives of hermits living deep in the North American forest on the border between Arkansas and Missouri.

The everyday lives of children living in the violent climate of certain favelas in Rio de Janeiro, the inconsistencies of consumer society and the everyday lives of young people in Ireland's poorest district are further topics that await visitors.
