A growing population needs more regional and local transportation. The Association of Public Transport therefore expects additional costs of 30 percent in this area by 2030. Although customers will bear the lion's share of the costs, those placing the orders will have to make a contribution.
Despite great efforts to increase efficiency, transport companies are largely unable to influence their costs, according to a media conference held by the Association of Public Transport (VöV) in Bern on Wednesday. This includes personnel and energy costs as well as investments in decarbonization.
In a position paper, the association states that the more than 1,500 lines of suburban trains, buses, streetcars, boats and cable cars are dependent on contributions from the public sector. The federal and cantonal authorities share the costs of public regional passenger and local transport equally with customers.
Public transport would face major challenges. Population growth requires more services. Radical cost-cutting measures or a reduction in services are not a solution against this backdrop, the VöV stated in its position paper as a red line. It firmly rejects any postponement of the phase-out of fossil fuels in public road transport.
The regional passenger transport and local transport companies organized in the association would have to cope with these factors under the pressure of an increasingly competitive federal budget. The authorities at all levels are rightly planning to expand public transport services. The federal government, cantons and municipalities are therefore obliged to do their part.
