The road into the Saas Valley VS is expected to reopen on Wednesday. On Monday, the valley was still cut off from the outside world after last Thursday's landslide.

"The canton has announced that the work will continue at least until Tuesday evening," Simon Bumann, spokesman for the regional command staff, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday. "We are surprised because we thought the repairs would be faster," said Bumann.

The cantonal road was due to reopen at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, said cantonal engineer Vincent Pellissier. "Several thousand tons have tumbled down the mountain. Four days later, we will have 40 meters of road rebuilt," Pellissier continued.

Helicopter evacuation flights were also resumed on Monday. So far, around 800 of the more than 2,000 blocked tourists have been flown from Saas-Fee to Stalden.
