The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have resumed passenger services in the Gotthard Base Tunnel seven weeks after a devastating freight train derailment. On Friday evening, a train left Zurich and arrived in Erstfeld UR to enter the tunnel, as reported by a Keystone-SDA photographer. The Federal Office of Transport had previously granted the necessary approval. On August 10th, a freight train derailed in the western tube of the world's longest railway tunnel due to a broken wheel, causing immense damage. The locomotive driver remained unharmed. The repair works are expected to take months, with 8 kilometres of track and 20,000 sleepers being replaced. The freight traffic in the undamaged eastern tube was resumed on August 23rd. During the repair works, no passenger trains are allowed to pass through the eastern tube due to the rescue concept. The SBB have stated that weekend services are possible as there are fewer freight trains on the tracks at this time and the work in the western tube is suspended.
