Retail Sales Decline in August Compared to Last Year

In August 2023, the Swiss retail sector saw a decrease in turnover compared to the same period the previous year. Taking inflation into account, the decrease was even more pronounced. In August, Swiss retail stores experienced a nominal sales decrease of 0.2 percent compared to the previous year (value adjusted for sales and holiday effects). When taking into account factors such as inflation, real sales decreased by 1.8 percent year-on-year, according to the provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) published on Monday. Excluding sales from gas stations, retailers recorded a nominal year-on-year sales increase of 0.4 percent in August (adjusted for sales and holiday effects; real -1.3%). Compared to the previous month of July, the turnover according to the BFS, adjusted for seasonal effects, increased by 0.4 percent; also in real terms there was a plus of 0.4 percent. Excluding petrol stations, the retail sector recorded a nominal, seasonally adjusted turnover increase of 0.3 percent (real +0.3%) compared to July. In the month-on-month comparison, the retail trade in food, beverages and tobacco recorded a nominal sales increase of 0.9 percent (real +0.8%). The non-food sector registered a nominal increase of 0.1 percent (real +0.4%). The Retail Sales Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office is based on a random sample of around 3000 companies. It is a monthly survey, with small companies being asked quarterly about their monthly sales figures.
