Swiss museums have more than made up for the slump in visitor numbers due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the number of museums overall has fallen.

Swiss museums recorded almost 15 million admissions in 2023. That was five percent more than in 2019, the year before the pandemic. And it was 12% more than the average for the years 2015 to 2019 before the pandemic. This is according to the museum statistics published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday.

The downer, however, is that there are fewer museums overall. In 2023, Switzerland had 1104 museums, 37 fewer than in 2019.

The most popular museums among visitors in the reporting year were science and technology museums. The former recorded 27 percent more admissions. Technical museums recorded 26% more than the average for the years 2015 to 2019.

For the first time, the FSO also collected data on the sustainability and accessibility of Swiss museums. In terms of sustainability, museums with high visitor numbers and natural science museums came out on top in 2023. The majority of them have sensitized their staff to the topic, used modular or recyclable materials for their exhibitions or given the public food for thought.

Natural science museums were also the most exemplary in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities, for example in terms of wheelchair accessibility. Art museums in particular offered special educational programs for people with disabilities. In both categories, however, regional and local museums were the most likely to lag behind.

The FSO has been presenting museum statistics since 2015. Since 2022, the survey has taken place every two years.
