The Swiss retail sector is suffering from poor consumer sentiment. The market research company GfK is therefore forecasting zero growth for 2023.
This is because in the year to date, retail sales have mainly been boosted by price increases, said Myriam Meier, Head of Retail at GfK Switzerland, at an industry event in Zurich on Tuesday. And the market only grew in the food sector in the first nine months.
According to the GfK Market Monitor, sales growth in the first nine months compared to the same period of the previous year amounted to 1.4% across the entire Swiss retail sector. The food and near-food sector grew by 3.7%.
However, the non-food sector has suffered a 1.9% drop in sales so far this year. Demand here in particular has declined significantly.
Bleak prospects
The poor consumer sentiment is likely to be increasingly reflected in the figures by the end of the year, Meier explained. At the end of the first half of the year, GfK reported an overall market increase of 1.7%, 0.3 percentage points more than after three more quarters.
Meier is also less optimistic about the traditionally strong final quarter in the retail sector: "We expect the retail sector as a whole to be in the black at the end of the year."
