“Salmonella Outbreak in Children’s Chocolate in 2022 Affecting 49 People”

In the past year, 49 people in Switzerland have been infected with Salmonella due to the consumption of Ferrero's "Kinder" chocolate. Most of the patients were children, according to the Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV). Investigations suggest that the source of the Salmonellosis outbreak was a Belgian processing plant where "Kinder" chocolate products were produced. The recall and withdrawal of these products worldwide reduced the risk of further infections. The hospitalization rate across the affected countries was almost 50%. In July 2023, the same Belgian plant was again affected by Salmonella, prompting Ferrero to partially suspend production. In Switzerland, food-borne illness outbreaks were not very common until 2020 (13 outbreaks). However, from 2021 (37 outbreaks) onwards, there has been a significant increase in the number of outbreaks. In 2022, there were 40 outbreaks, with the most significant being a national Listeriosis outbreak in early July in a Thurgau fish smokehouse. Investigations are ongoing against the smokehouse as contaminated fish may have caused a death, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG).
