German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has requested a vote of confidence from the Bundestag in order to bring about a new parliamentary election on February 23.
As the German Press Agency learned from government circles, the motion was submitted to Bundestag President Bärbel Bas on Wednesday as planned. The vote is scheduled for Monday.
Scholz's "traffic light" coalition of SPD, FDP and Greens collapsed at the beginning of November. It is therefore considered certain that the Bundestag will not give him a vote of confidence.
In this case, Scholz will propose to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier that the Bundestag be dissolved, which the head of state will then have three weeks to do. If Steinmeier decides to do so, the new election must take place within 60 days.
