Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to maintain the existing controls at the borders with several neighboring countries "for as long as possible". They have proven to be "very efficient", Scholz said in an interview for ZDF's "heute journal". He therefore wanted to "continue border controls for as long as possible". "We must always do this within the framework of European law. But I can assure you that we will succeed."
Checks have been carried out at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since mid-October last year, and at the German-Austrian border since September 2015. However, they are only selective. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) and Federal Police President Dieter Romann praise the controls as a success and point to the arrest of people smugglers, among other things. People are also being turned back at the border. The number of unauthorized entries has fallen recently.
However, those who want to apply for asylum are generally allowed into the country. CDU leader Friedrich Merz recently called for a general ban on the admission of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan. Scholz said that the individual right to asylum was not up for discussion. "The individual right to asylum remains intact. That is in our Basic Law. And nobody will question that with my support," he said.
