Schuttstrom Stops at Brienz – Residents Likely to Return Soon

The residents of the Swiss village of Brienz may soon be able to return to their homes permanently after a massive landslide from a mountain above the village. The 80 residents had to evacuate their homes in May due to fears of a larger rockfall or debris flow that could have swept away the entire village. The debris flow occurred on the night of June 16th, burying a road and meadows in meters of debris and stopping just a few meters from the village. According to geologists, the situation on the mountain has since calmed down. However, the head of the early warning service, Stefan Schneider, warned that there could be danger from a plateau above the area in the medium term. The village mayor, Daniel Albertin, expressed his confidence that it would only be a matter of days before the residents could move back in. They are already allowed to visit the village for a few hours at a time, but no one is allowed to stay overnight yet. Brienz is located on the road from Lenzerheide to Davos in the canton of Graubünden at an altitude of around 1150 meters.
