Second round of elections to the Council of States: red-green duo in Geneva at risk

Second rounds of voting for the Council of States will take place in four western Swiss cantons on Sunday. In the canton of Geneva, Lisa Mazzone (Greens) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP) have to fear for their seats.
In the second round of the Council of States elections in Geneva, the conservative challengers Mauro Poggia (MCG) and Céline Amaudruz (SVP) are competing against the current red-green duo of Mazzone and Sommaruga.
The left, which has represented Geneva unchallenged in the small chamber since 2007, wants to defend its two seats. However, 35-year-old Mazzone and 64-year-old Sommaruga, who were already on a joint ticket in the first round of voting, only came second and third respectively. Popular in the canton of Geneva, Poggia from the protest party Mouvement citoyens genevois (MCG) surprised everyone by coming first in the first round of voting.
In the second round of voting for the Council of States in Valais, FDP National Councillor Philippe Nantermod is challenging the two incumbents Beat Rieder and Marianne Maret from the center. Toppling this bastion is likely to be difficult given the results of the first round.
Three candidates are competing against each other in the second round of the Council of States elections in the canton of Fribourg. The two incumbent members of the Council of States, Isabelle Chassot (center) and Johanna Gapany (FDP), are the favorites going into the race, while Alizée Rey (SP) could spring a surprise.
The election for the second seat in the Vaud Council of States is a duel between FDP politician Pascal Broulis and the Green Party's Raphaël Mahaim. Broulis is the favorite going into the race. Pierre-Yves Maillard, SP National Councillor and President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), was elected to the Council of States in the first round of voting on October 22.
