Senate Commission to Retire 25 Leopard-2 Tanks

The Swiss Ständeratskommission has voted in favour of the proposal to decommission 25 Leopard-2 tanks that are currently stored and not in use. The majority of the commission believes that the sale of these tanks to the German manufacturer Rheinmetall would send a positive signal to Switzerland's European partners. The minority of the commission believes that the Swiss Army should maintain a sufficient reserve of tanks in case of an international market shortage. The Swiss government has assured that the tanks will not be sold to Ukraine and will remain in Germany or other EU or NATO countries. The Ständerat will make a final decision on the decommissioning of the tanks as part of the 2023 Army Bill. The bill also proposes an increase in the Army's budget for 2021-2024 from 21.1 to 21.7 billion Swiss francs. The commission has expressed concern about the financing of the Army and has called for a gradual increase in Army spending to reach at least one percent of the gross domestic product by 2030.nnnnnnnnnnnnnn
