An 87-year-old woman handed over over a hundred thousand Swiss francs to a fraudster in Chur on Tuesday following a so-called shock call. A telephone fraudster had previously told her that she needed the money to bail out her daughter after an accident.
The fraudster called the senior citizen on Tuesday afternoon and pretended to be a public prosecutor from Chur, as the cantonal police of Graubünden reported on Wednesday. The senior citizen's daughter had caused a serious traffic accident in which a woman lost her life. Bail must now be paid.
According to the police, the gullible and helpful woman then handed over over over a hundred thousand Swiss francs to an unknown man who was waiting outside the entrance to the house. The cantonal police have launched an investigation into the fraud.
The cantonal police recommend that if you receive a call with a shocking message and a demand for money, you should end the call immediately - regardless of who is calling. For more information on shock calls, the police refer to the Swiss Crime Prevention website.
