The problem of a lack of skilled workers in the hotel industry has eased somewhat. Andreas Züllig, President of the industry association Hotelleriesuisse, said in an interview that the remaining shortage could be alleviated.

Many employees have returned to the hotel industry from sectors such as logistics, said Züllig in an interview with CH Media published on Friday. The country's top hotelier estimates that 5 to 10 percent of vacancies are currently unfilled. Züllig said that businesses could counteract this with shorter opening hours.

"It was bad after the coronavirus crisis," he said looking back. At that time, all companies were looking for employees at the same time. Six out of ten businesses had to adjust their offerings in 2021 due to a lack of skilled workers, as the association reported a year ago. At the time, Hotelleriesuisse complained about a mismatch between the skills in demand and those on offer rather than a lack of available skilled workers.

Last summer, the association campaigned for a relaxation of the Foreign Nationals Act. Third-country nationals with Swiss qualifications are important skilled workers for Swiss companies, it said.
