Due to a debris flow caused by the heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, the Simplon route is no longer passable until further notice. Material was still sliding onto the section of the route at Galerie Engi VS until the evening.

The area around the Engi Gallery had been at risk for several weeks, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced on Saturday evening. The debris flow then occurred at 4.30 pm. No one was injured.

Since then, however, the road between Ried-Brig and the Simplon Pass has been closed. It is not possible to comment on the damage to the infrastructure or make forecasts about further developments. The situation can only be analyzed in the course of Sunday morning, when safety is guaranteed.

The canton of Valais had already decided to close the entire Simplon route from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Sunday morning due to the heavy rainfall.
