The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced on Thursday that they will resume passenger train services through the Gotthard Base Tunnel from Friday. There will be one train to the south on Friday and one to the north on Sunday. During the following three peak autumn weekends, two additional connections to the south and one to the north will be added. The Friday evening train from Zurich to Lugano and the Sunday evening train from Locarno to Zurich will run until the timetable change. The SBB will use double-decker compositions for the Saturday morning trains from Zurich to Bellinzona and the Sunday afternoon train from Lugano to Zurich from Saturday, 7 October, to increase the number of seats available. The journey time will be reduced by 15 to 30 minutes. The SBB recommend reserving a seat for the connections through the Base Tunnel, which will be possible from 6 October. For safety reasons, overcrowded trains are not allowed to pass through the tunnel. The first train will pass through the Base Tunnel on Friday at 17.33 from Zurich. For safety reasons, the SBB have limited the passenger traffic to weekends, when the number of passengers on the Gotthard axis is highest and fewer goods trains are running. No repair work will take place in the west tunnel, which was damaged in the derailment, during the weekends. The SBB have created safety documents and adapted the rescue concept to enable the safe evacuation of passengers in an emergency.
