Ten days after the devastating storm in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the risk of accidents remains high due to the numerous damaged roofs. The army has been helping with the security work since Thursday morning, with the immediate priority being the securing of access to educational and extracurricular facilities in preparation for the start of the school year on August 14th. The city of Neuchâtel and the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds welcomed the army's assistance, with 80 soldiers being sent to the watchmaking city on Wednesday. The army is using disaster relief, engineering troops and mountain specialists to help with the security work, but is not involved in any reconstruction work. The fire brigade and rescue services have called on the population to remain vigilant due to the risk of accidents. The city's mayor, Jean-Daniel Jeanneret, said that the help of the army was essential in order to return to normal as quickly as possible. The canton of Neuchâtel had requested the army's assistance due to the return of many people from their holidays, the upcoming start of the school year and the heavy strain on existing resources. So far, around 500 people from various units have been involved in the clearing of debris, security work and restoration of infrastructure since the storm on July 24th. The state council and the city council of La Chaux-de-Fonds expressed their gratitude to the civilian emergency forces. The violent storm swept over the watchmaking city ten days ago with wind gusts of over 200 kilometres per hour, causing an estimated damage of at least 70 to 90 million francs to buildings alone, according to the cantonal building insurance. 4000 to 5000 of the approximately 7500 buildings in the region were affected by the bad weather, 1600 hectares of forest were damaged, thousands of motor vehicles were destroyed and one person in a car died due to an overturned construction crane. Around 40 other people were injured.nnnn
