Solothurn: Franziska Roth secures SP seat in the Council of States

National Councillor Franziska Roth (SP) has won the battle for the second seat in the Council of States in Solothurn. The 57-year-old can therefore succeed Roberto Zanetti (SP). She left her rival Christian Imark (SVP) well behind.
Roth was supported by a cross-party committee of the SP, GLP and Greens and won 43,668 votes. Imark was well behind her with 35,904 votes. The 41-year-old was supported by the FDP. The SVP has so far been defeated in several attempts to win a seat in the Solothurn Council of States or cantonal council.
Voting with more than just the party ticket
She is aware of her responsibility for the entire canton, emphasized the new member of the Council of States in an interview with Swiss television SRF. "I will also vote for the cause and not just with the party ticket," said Roth. In an interview with regional broadcaster Tele M1, Imark expressed his disappointment that "despite support far beyond my camp", it was not enough for him to be elected.
Voter turnout was 44.12%, as the Solothurn state chancellery reported on Sunday. As expected, Imark was ahead in many rural communities, while Roth won many votes in the agglomerations of Solothurn and Olten.
With Roth's election, the seats in the Solothurn Council of States will remain in the hands of the SP and the center (formerly CVP), as has been the case since 2011. Pirmin Bischof (center) was confirmed as the incumbent by a large margin in the first round of voting.
Young woman from Grenchen moves up to the National Council
Roth's seat in the National Council will probably be taken by Cantonal Councillor Farah Rumy. The 31-year-old from Grenchen is a nurse and vocational school teacher. The co-president of "SP-Migrant:innen Kanton Solothurn" came to Switzerland with her family from Sri Lanka when she was six years old.
