In the National Council elections in the canton of Zurich, the center has gained two additional seats. The SP was able to significantly increase its share of the vote. On the other hand, GLP and the Greens lost seats. Daniel Jositsch (SP) was already elected to the Council of States. A second round of voting is needed for the second seat. While the losses of GLP and Greens in the national elections are in line with national trends, the SVP in the canton of Zurich was unable to buck the trend and increase its voter share enough to gain a seat. The Social Democratic Party (SP) achieved strong results in the two major cities of Zurich and Winterthur. Overall, the party's voter share increased by 3.83 percentage points, resulting in an additional seat. We remain at 10 seats. The center was able to increase its voter share by 2.1 percentage points to 8.15 percent, earning two additional seats. The strongest party remains the SVP with a voter share of 27.35 percent (+0.65 percentage points) and unchanged 10 seats. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) was able to retain its five seats in the National Council, while the Christian Democratic People's Party (EVP) was able to hold on to its one seat. Thanks to a list connection with the critics of measures from Aufrecht and Mass-Voll and the Swiss Democrats, the Education and Science Party (EDU) has also gained a seat in the National Council. The number of seats has increased from 35 to 36. Elected to the National Council for the first time are Nina Fehr Düsel, Martin Hübscher (SVP), Islam Alijaj (SP), Anna Rosenwasser (SP), Bettina Balmer (FDP), Nicole Barandun (Mitte), Yvonne Bürgin (Mitte) and Erich Vontobel (EDU). In the canton of Zurich, the turnout for the National Council elections was 46.95 percent. Four incumbents were not re-elected: Judith Bellaiche (GLP), Jörg Mäder (GLP), Therese Schläpfer (SVP) and Meret Schneider (Green). Due to population growth, the canton of Zurich now has 36 seats in the National Council instead of the previous 35. The second seat in the Council of States is hotly contested. In the election for the Council of States, a second round of voting is required. The current Council of States member Daniel Jositsch (SP) has been confirmed so far. None of the other candidates achieved an absolute majority. The Swiss People's Party's National Councilor Gregor Rutz received the second most votes, followed by the Free Democratic Party's National Councilor Regine Sauter. Also running were Tiana Angelina Moser (Green Liberal Party), Daniel Leupi (Greens), Philipp Kutter (Middle) and Nik Gugger (Christian Democratic People's Party). The second round of voting will take place on November 19th. It is still unclear if the conservative parties and the left-green parties can agree on a joint candidate. Representatives of the Swiss People's Party (SVP) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) want to maintain their respective candidates according to initial reactions. The two party presidencies will discuss the further course of action on Monday. ©Keystone/SDA
