The Cantonal Court of St. Gallen has dismissed the appeal of an arsonist. The 36-year-old wanted to avert inpatient therapy ordered by the See-Gaster District Court. The man was himself a member of the fire department.

In its ruling published on Monday, the cantonal court confirmed the inpatient psychiatric measure. This is popularly known as "minor detention". The therapy takes place in a closed facility and release depends on the success of the treatment.

The arsonist accepted the sentence of 38 months' imprisonment handed down by the court of first instance. However, he fought unsuccessfully before the cantonal court to be released immediately after serving his sentence. The verdict is not yet final.

The truck driver, who already had a criminal record for a series of arsons in Meilen ZH, admitted to setting several fires in Schmerikon SG between 2021 and 2022. As a member of the fire department, he helped to extinguish them.
