Swiss universities are placing more and more importance on sustainability in their processes, structures and core tasks. According to the WWF, this is shown by the environmental organization's fourth university sustainability rating. However, no university has achieved the "visionary" rating.

However, according to the assessment published on Friday, four of the 29 educational institutions assessed received the grade "ambitious". These are the University of Bern, the University of Lausanne, the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Zurich University of Teacher Education.

Like the vast majority of the institutions surveyed, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich is now only in the "upper midfield". It had performed best in the last rating in 2021, ranking "ambitious".

Today, all Swiss universities are addressing the issue of sustainability, the WWF notes in a press release. Overall, they have taken a big step forward since the first rating in 2017.

However, sustainability still needs to be strengthened in teaching: it should be integrated into the curricula of all disciplines in both subject-specific and interdisciplinary ways. This is to ensure that students deal with the challenges of sustainability from their first year of study.
