Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB) once again transported more passengers last year. The number of passengers rose to 31.1 million. The railroad company reported a profit of CHF 11.58 million for 2023.

Two thirds of the profit came from the non-compensated long-distance transport and real estate divisions, and around one third from the regional passenger transport and infrastructure divisions, the Eastern Swiss railroad company announced on Monday.

The two long-distance lines "Treno Gottardo" (train journey via the old Gotthard route) and "Aare Linth" (from Bern via Zurich to Chur) reported rising passenger numbers last year.

The frequencies for the "Treno Gottardo" were once again significantly higher than the previous year throughout the year and also before the closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel from late summer, it said. According to SOB, it will be able to continue its cooperation with SBB in the next concession period after 2029.

All Südostbahn passengers together covered a total of 1.035 billion kilometers last year. "A record figure that makes us proud," Chairman of the Board of Directors Benedikt Würth is quoted as saying in the press release. "Never before have our passengers broken this magical barrier of one billion passenger kilometers," Würth said.
