The presidents of the SVP and the Center Party have initiated a discussion about future priorities following the popular vote against the freeway expansion. They no longer want those regions that said no on Sunday to be a priority for the time being.

He was somewhat disturbed by the fact that some cantons that had received projects as part of the bill had rejected the highway expansion, said SVP President Marcel Dettling in the "Elephant Round" on "Blick TV". The Schwyz National Councillor was referring to the clear "no" votes in Geneva, Vaud and the canton of Basel-Stadt.

His advice to Transport Minister Albert Rösti is certainly not to push ahead with further projects in those cantons, says Dettling. Instead, this should be done in those cantons that are "pro-car" and "pro-business".

The Lake Geneva region and the Basel region in particular have been calling for years for something to finally be done, said Mitte President Gerhard Pfister. Now we need to think about where the next projects should take place. The message to the regions mentioned must be that it is highly unlikely that anything will happen there in the next 20 years.

The two politicians did not want their statements to be understood as a threat. However, SP Co-President Cédric Wermuth objected that their approach was not very Swiss. People should not be told "If you vote like this, we will punish you for the next 20 years".
