The SVP welcomed the No to the biodiversity initiative on Sunday. The electorate had had enough of "green know-it-alls". In reality, immigration is the greatest threat to nature. The Centre Party was satisfied because a Yes vote would have paralysed the entire rural area.
The initiative would have removed 30 percent of the country's biodiversity from food production, wrote the SVP. The missing food would have had to be imported. This is just a nonsensical contradiction.
The Green initiators had concealed the real reason for the threat to biodiversity: Excessive immigration and the associated concreting over of the landscape. The left-wing green parties wanted this immigration and the biodiversity initiative at the same time. That was dishonest. In addition, the initiative would have prevented the expansion of hydropower.
The center party stated that intact biodiversity is central to the environment. However, the initiative was the wrong instrument. Various areas such as food supply, security of supply and the provision of renewable energies would have been affected. The entire rural area would be paralyzed in its development. In addition, agriculture is doing a lot for biodiversity.
The sponsors of the initiative take a different view: more than a third of the species are endangered or extinct, the organization said. The current measures are not sufficient to safeguard biodiversity. Science also confirms the need for action. The federal government and parliament have a duty to keep the promises made during the referendum campaign. The next step must be a second, effective action plan by the Federal Council.
