76-year-old Charles Poncet is giving up his seat in the National Council. In the federal elections in October, he came second behind Céline Amaudruz among the candidates of the Geneva SVP. Poncet will be replaced by Thomas Bläsi, who will retain his seat in the upper chamber.

The SVP Geneva announced on Friday that Poncet would give preference to his commitment to the Geneva Grand Council. "If the SVP Geneva had won a third seat in the National Council, I would undoubtedly have accepted the election," Poncet is quoted as saying in the communiqué. Bläsi is the right man in Bern, especially when it comes to the key issue of healthcare.

The 52-year-old Bläsi, a pharmacist by profession, replaced Yves Nidegger, who stepped down, in the National Council last May. Poncet was a member of the National Council for the Liberal Party from 1991 to 1995.
