The Swiss E-ID should also be able to be used abroad and at the same time guarantee a high level of privacy protection. The trust infrastructure required for the E-ID will therefore probably have to support various technologies in parallel.
This is the result of investigations into the technical implementation of the electronic identity (e-ID), as the Federal Council wrote on Friday. At its meeting, it was informed of the results to date by the responsible Department of Justice and Police (FDJP). The e-ID will nevertheless be introduced as planned in 2026.
The consultation, which has now ended, focused on the question of what should be given greater weight: the protection of privacy or the ability to use the e-ID abroad. The feedback showed that both requirements are very important.
The Federal Council wrote that there is currently no technology that fulfills both objectives. It can therefore be assumed that the trust infrastructure would have to support several technologies at the same time. Several technologies are also used in the EU and the USA.
The FDJP will continue to examine the variant with parallel technologies. Clarifications are required on technical and financial issues. A proposal is expected to be submitted to the Federal Council before the end of the year.
The state E-ID is the second attempt to introduce electronic identity. The first - a private-sector solution - was rejected at the ballot box in 2021. The revised proposal received praise in the National Council last March. The Council of States has not yet decided on it.
