The airline Swiss is extending the suspension of flights to and from Tel Aviv and Beirut until August 21. The airspace over Iran, Iraq and Israel will also not be used until August 21, Swiss announced on Monday.

After further examination of the situation in the Middle East, Swiss has decided to extend the suspension of the flights in question. Last Wednesday, Swiss announced these restrictions up to and including August 13.

The safety of passengers and crews is always the top priority, according to the latest announcement. Affected passengers would be contacted and could rebook to a later travel date free of charge or receive a full refund of the ticket price.

Iran is threatening to retaliate after the deadly attack in Tehran on the head of the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, Ismail Haniya. The USA, Israel's closest ally, has therefore increased its military presence in the region and deployed more warships and fighter jets.

The Hezbollah militia, which is allied with Iran and based in Lebanon, has been engaged in regular border skirmishes with Israel since the start of the Gaza war on October 7. Last week, the Israeli army killed Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also announced a response.
