Thanks to above-average precipitation, the Swiss glaciers are starting this year's warm season with a nice snow cushion. This is according to data from the glacier monitoring network, as reported by the weather service Meteonews on Thursday.

The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (Glamos) has been measuring the amount of snow on a number of glaciers every spring for several years. According to the data, these allow an estimate of the upcoming melting season.

After the catastrophic results of the last two years, the glaciers surveyed showed a significant increase in snow cover in 2023/24, as Meteonews wrote. The snow cover on all 14 glaciers surveyed was 12 to 60 percent higher than the values for the reference period from 2010 to 2020.

Although no clear north-south trend could be identified, the predominant weather patterns of the winter became apparent. The glaciers in Ticino and the Engadine in particular had above-average snow cover. There was also significantly more snow on the glaciers in the far west as well as in southern Valais and central Switzerland.

According to Meteonews, extrapolated to all of Switzerland's 1,400 glaciers, there was 31% more snow compared to the reference period. This suggests that mass losses in 2024 are likely to be lower than in the two previous years.
