Swiss meat production increased its share to 82.9% of the total meat volume in 2023. This is an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the volume of meat produced domestically fell by 2.6%. With the exception of beef, veal and lamb, there were declines for all meats.

The oversupply of pork in 2022 resulted in a 5.6% decrease in domestic production, as announced by the meat industry association Proviande on Thursday. An increase in pork exports of 60 percent compared to 2022 contributed to the easing of the market situation. According to Proviande, exports were thus twice as high as in 2021.

The total meat supply in 2023 amounted to 436,359 tons, 3.5 percent less than in 2022, meaning that the average demand for meat fell slightly as the population grew.

The association went on to say that different figures were being passed around regarding meat consumption. What is often referred to as annual consumption is often the amount of meat available in the retail and hospitality sectors.

According to rough estimates, the population eats 75 percent of this. The rest is waste such as bones or trimmed fat, other losses due to the expiration date and pet food.

In the first and most recent consumption study to date, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) determined an average per capita consumption of 106 grams of meat per day in 2014/2015, as Proviande wrote.
