2023 was a bad year for Swiss companies involved in paper, cardboard and film production. Not only did they generate less turnover, they also produced less cardboard and paper.

Specifically, turnover fell by 22% to CHF 877.6 million and production by 14% to 877 thousand tons, according to figures released by the industry association SPKF on Monday. Most member companies were affected by the decline. These figures do not include Perlen Packaging AG, which manufactures films, or APS, which trades in waste paper.

Only tissue paper was able to make gains, according to the communiqué. In contrast, all other grades lost ground, in some cases massively. Shipments of graphic paper fell by a good 30 percent and newsprint by 17.6 percent.

In 2023, the high prices for energy and waste paper continued to be a concern for the industry, SPKF reported. Although these prices have fallen somewhat, they are still higher than before the war in Ukraine.
