The Fotostiftung Schweiz is launching the so-called "Image Archive Online". With this portal, the foundation is making Switzerland's photographic cultural heritage accessible free of charge.
The Fotostiftung Schweiz has digitized around 37,700 photographs and placed them on the "Bildarchiv Online" platform. "Researchers, media professionals, historians and the photography-loving public have a versatile tool with the 'Bildarchiv Online'," wrote the Fotostiftung in a press release on Thursday.
The comprehensive photo material is intended for "targeted research or for an inspiring journey of discovery through Swiss photography", it continued. However, free access is only valid for viewing the images. Further use is only possible under certain conditions. For example, the photographs may not be altered.
The "Image Archive Online" platform is the result of extensive preparatory work, for example to make negatives or slide films digitally accessible. In 2017, the Fotostiftung purchased a professional repro system and set up its own digital lab.
The Fotostiftung Schweiz looks after one of the most extensive collections of Swiss photography from the mid-19th century onwards, with around 160 archives of photographers - including Marianne Breslauer, Gotthard Schuh, Hans Staub and the glass plate archive of sports photographer Jules Decrauzat. In this context, there has been a close connection and cooperation with the Keystone-SDA news agency archive for years. As Lukas Kobel, Head of Archives at Keystone-SDA, explains, this archive is responsible for the media and commercial distribution of images from the diverse collection of the Fotostiftung in Winterthur.
