The activity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Switzerland has picked up again in September. However, a sustainable turnaround is still expected to take some time. The Raiffeisen KMU Purchasing Manager Index (KMU-PMI) for the month of September rose by 4.8 points to 51.1 index points, marking the first time since April that it has been above the growth threshold of 50. The proportion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reporting an increase in business activity has remained nearly unchanged, according to Raiffeisen on Monday. However, this time significantly more businesses reported a stable development and no decrease. The recovery was seen across almost all components, with some even showing a very strong increase such as production (to 53.2 from 47.3) or order backlog (to 51.9 from 46.0). The improved business situation in September is likely primarily due to the end of the summer holiday period and therefore not a sign of a sustainable economic turnaround, Raiffeisen emphasizes. The macroeconomic environment remains challenging nonetheless. Thus, most other purchasing manager indices continue to show an industrial recession, both domestically and in many other countries.
