The national grid company Swissgrid has increased the capacity of the power line between Bassecourt JU and Mühleberg BE. According to the press release, this completes a sub-project for future grid and supply security.
The voltage increase is particularly essential in winter, when Switzerland is dependent on electricity imports from neighboring countries, Swissgrid wrote in a press release on Thursday. This represents a further milestone in the implementation of the "Strategic Grid 2025" project.
The line from Bassecourt to Mühleberg is 45 kilometers long and dates back to 1978. According to the press release, it was taken off the grid for three months from the end of July for assembly work and modernization. On November 21, it was finally put back into operation at the higher voltage of 380 kV. The investments amounted to around 17 million Swiss francs.
According to the press release, north-south connections such as the Bassecourt - Mühleberg line are not only important for the transportation of energy from domestic production. They also increase Switzerland's import capability, as it cannot cover its electricity requirements from its own production in winter.
The modernization of the transmission grid lays the foundation for a sustainable energy future, Swissgrid continued. However, the conversion and expansion is only progressing slowly. "Only a third of Swissgrid's 6700-kilometre transmission grid dates from after 1980."
