As a neutral state, Switzerland sees a special role for itself as a mediator between hostile states. For example, it represents the interests of the USA and Canada in Iran and the interests of Iran in Egypt.

In Russia and Georgia, stakeholders in the other state are under the protective power of Switzerland.

It also has a long tradition as a peacemaker. According to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland has supported more than 30 peace processes in more than 20 countries in recent decades. Discreet meetings often take place in Switzerland. Among other things, it mediated in the 1920s when the Turkish borders were drawn up, in the 1950s and 1960s at the end of the Korean War and the Algerian War, as well as between Turkey and Armenia and hostile sides in Nepal, Colombia and Mozambique.

In 1985, the then presidents of the Soviet Union and the USA, Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, initiated the end of the Cold War with a meeting in Geneva. The last time US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Geneva was in 2021. However, because Switzerland implemented the EU sanctions against Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moscow no longer considers it neutral.
