Switzerland continues to be at the forefront of digitalization. The country's strengths include, for example, the progress made with the mobile network. The Institute for Management Development (IMD) identifies weaknesses in areas such as cyber security.

Specifically, Switzerland took fifth place in the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR). Switzerland is followed by the USA, the Netherlands, Singapore and Denmark. According to the study published on Thursday, the USA has thus regained its top position with strong results in the areas of knowledge, technology and future readiness.

Strengths and weaknesses

The WDCR 2023 examined 64 economies with regard to the three main factors of knowledge, technology and sustainability. These are divided into nine sub-factors comprising a total of 54 criteria. These aspects were evaluated using data and survey results from around 4,000 managers.

Switzerland scored highly in the areas of mobile broadband connections and spending on education, for example. However, the effective enforcement of intellectual property rights, the availability of managers and the transfer of knowledge between the academic and private sectors were also praised.

The country scored rather poorly in the factors cyber security, use of big data and analytics as well as e-government and e-participation.
